March is a time of awakening. The first notable sign are the March flowers blooming. The bright yellow cups stand out brilliantly next to the barren dead landscape of winter. Although the weather is still cool, the extended cold winter temperatures are gone. It’s like a rollercoaster ride; one day 70 degrees and the next its 40 degrees. It’s frustrating wishing the weather would make up its mind what it wants to do, but that’s the time of year it is. As if someone flipped a switch, the Redbuds, Forsythias, and Pear trees are starting to bloom. It seems like a long month in anticipation of outdoor activities. It’s time to start thinking about the garden, still to early to do anything but thoughts turn that way. It seems like a race every year to see who can get their tomatoes out quickest and get that first home grown tomato. The grass will need mowing sometime mid month, the wild onions and monkey grass start growing with a vengeance. The fish are just starting to bite, influenced by the cold fronts passing through every couple of days. Every now and then a turkey gobble can be heard and what few snakes are out and about are lying in the sun sheltered from the wind. Every now and then you’ll see a buck still carrying his horns and the does are still grouped together scrounging for the new growth just starting in the fields or the last few bits of food left over from the previous year. It’s a good time to be out with the first few smells of spring in the air.
