April in Kentucky is an “in between” month. The weather is usually starting to level out as far as temperatures go, not the rollercoaster ride of last month, but not the warmer temps to come either. Just more steady. Farmers are working like crazy to get that early corn out. We still have our share of cold fronts coming through but they don’t last long and the water in the lakes and ponds start to warm. Somewhere around early to mid month the dogwoods bloom and that means the crappie are spawning. For about a week to 10 day period, all kinds of boats line the banks fishing the buck brush in the shallow water. The bass start their pre-spawn feeding and some good fishing can be found in the small ponds and watersheds. There is a notable difference in the woods during April. Throughout the month the woods green up and thicken from all the rain and warm temperatures. Gobblers are getting more intense with their calling and looking for hens, but I’m not a true turkey hunter. It’s hard to beat a good wade in a pond for largemouths. It’s a good way to pass the time, waiting for bow season, 5 months away.
