May is the unofficial start of summer in Kentucky. Everything has greened up, bushed out, and bloomed that’s going to and the weather is getting pert near hot, with no chance of frost until sometime this fall. Early corn is planted in April and corn planted now is just corn. The wheat is heading out, tall, and will be turning brown by the end of the month. April in Kentucky is an “in between” month. The weather is usually starting to level out as far as temperatures go, not the rollercoaster ride of last month, but not the warmer temps to come either. Just more steady. Farmers are working like crazy to get that early corn out. We still have our share of cold fronts coming through but they don’t last long and the water in the lakes and ponds start to warm. March is a time of awakening. The first notable sign are the March flowers blooming. The bright yellow cups stand out brilliantly next to the barren dead landscape of winter. Although the weather is still cool, the extended cold winter temperatures are gone. It’s like a rollercoaster ride; one day 70 degrees and the next its 40 degrees.
